Boaty Bill moved into one of the baches that sat between the bulk shed and the West Bank Road, shaded by a weeping willow. The baches were uniform, tidy, compact and comfortable. They were self-contained, each with an Atlas stove and modest furnishings. In its heyday Kos’s farm ran a crew of over twenty workers and most of them lived in the baches for the season.

Bill had a new plan when he returned to the valley. He was going to build a yacht right there between the road and the river on the flat by Newman’s sheds, with thirty miles to the nearest slipway.

When he was in Wellington, working as a boat builder, he’d come across a book by a man called Vito Dumas, an eccentric Argentinian who’d sailed solo around the world in 1943, determined to ignore the war in the process. He’d called into Wellington. The book had photographs of his yacht and Boaty Bill liked the look of it. It was a thirty-six-and-a-half-foot double-ender. Ten-foot-eight at the beam with a five-foot, six-inch draught and a forty-two-foot mast. Built of concrete, the yacht had a twelve-ton displacement. A draughtsman at the boatyard he was working at drew up plans for the yacht based on the specs and pictures in the book. Bill was going to build it and sail it back to England. If he went west, he’d be a circumnavigator when he got there.
